Hockey, Guys and Fights

What is it about the hockey game and guys duking it out on the ice? Not for the women to understand nor do they need to. It was all about the guys at the Up-State’s “Boyz Night Out” for the Hemophilia of South Carolina community. Fifty members of HSC’s bleeding disorders community from the upstate and beyond traveled into Greenville to the Bon Secures Wellness Center on a very cold Saturday night to attend the Chapters “Boyz Night Out” group activity specifically for them. With the goal to support our men and boys who are affected by bleeding disorders in mind; and to provide them an opportunity to discuss the emotional and physical aspects associated with living with bleeding disorders, these activities are important for our guys to empower each other and allow for the sharing of experiences. The guys support groups may assist each other with greater understandings, alleviate miss conceptions and fears of the unknown answers. But for now, they are just beginning to feel comfortable getting to know each other in a setting just for them.

The evening began with a wonderful Hockey Suite Buffet and educational presentation; Rebuilding the Body with Diet presented by Kevin Harris, who has hemophilia and Carmen Honnef, a registered Certified Dietitian Nutritionist. The presentation helped to understand the components of food to help balance not only a plate, but an entire day’s nutrition. Discussions centered around how specific patterns in diets may impact areas affected by hemophilia and how a healthy diet can be fun and affordable, and help to build a strong, resilient body. The evening was sponsored by Emergent Biosolutions and ended with an exciting last minute win and a special walk and picture out on the ice. The Chapter looks forward to many more Men’s support group activities and involvement from “The Boyz.”
